The Challenge
A piece of custom test equipment was larger than standard. It it did not fit in the required location, and the retaining mechanism would not latch.
It appeared that a major redesign would be required.
The assumed solution was to modify the equipment.
Looking More Closely
Before committing to redesigning the equipment, I took a step back to reconsider my assumption.
I realized that the fit issue was not necessarily with the equipment, rather it was the interface with the location that was causing the problem.
The Solution
A simple custom spacer to re-position the retaining mechanism solved the problem, avoiding any major re-design.
The Lesson
Good engineering isn’t always about creating something new. Sometimes it’s about slowing down, questioning assumptions, and discovering that the simplest solution was there all along.
